Tree Menu Navigation
The tree menu is the core feature of ChatGPT Message Tree. It automatically generates a hierarchical structure from your ChatGPT conversations, making navigation simple.
How to Use the Tree Menu
- As you converse with ChatGPT, the tree menu automatically updates to reflect the conversation structure
- Each tree node represents a section of the conversation (question or answer)
- Click any node to immediately jump to the corresponding part of the conversation
- Parent nodes can be expanded or collapsed to show or hide child nodes
Tree Menu Structure
The tree menu organizes content as follows:
- Root Node: Represents the entire conversation
- First-Level Nodes: Represent your questions
- Second-Level Nodes: Represent ChatGPT's answers
- Third-Level and Below: Represent subsections within answers, such as headings, lists, etc.
Customizing the Tree Menu
You can customize the tree menu in the following ways:
- Adjust Width: Drag the menu edge to adjust its width
- Change Position: Use the move function to place the menu anywhere on the screen
- Set Default Expansion Level: Configure the default number of expanded levels in settings
Note: The tree menu automatically analyzes the structure of ChatGPT responses, but for very long or complex responses, it may take a few seconds to complete the analysis.
Collapsible Sections
The collapsible sections feature allows you to collapse and expand different parts of the conversation, helping you focus on important content and reduce visual clutter.
How to Collapse and Expand Content
- In the tree menu, each node has a collapse/expand icon (triangle) next to it
- Click this icon to collapse or expand all child nodes of that node
- After collapsing a node, the corresponding content in the conversation will also collapse
- Click again to expand collapsed content

- Expand All: Click the "Expand All" button on the control bar
- Collapse to Specific Level: Select the "Collapse to Level" option in settings

- Auto-Collapse Code Blocks: Automatically collapses all code blocks
- Auto-Collapse Lists: Automatically collapses long lists
You can enable or disable these auto-collapse options in settings.
Tip: For long conversations, using the collapse feature can reduce scrolling and improve readability. This is especially useful when you need to reference earlier questions while collapsing intermediate content.
